Algeria confirm disappointment, and Tunisia advance to the quarterfinals after thrashing Zimbabwe

Tunisia, Jan 24 (EFE) .- Algeria, one of the favorites for the African Cup of Nations title, was eliminated on Monday without winning a match in the group stage.

The team drew for the second time today, this time against Senegal, already ranked 2-2, a result that allowed Tunisia, who beat Zimbabwe 4-2, to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Tunisia, who defeated Algeria in the second round and was aware that it was their own effort, left the country in the pursuit of victory. With just 36 minutes of the first half, the Tunisians have already won by 3-0 with goals from Naim Sliti, Youssef M'Sakni and Taha Khenissi. Knowledge Musona narrowed to 42, but Wahbi Khazri widened the lead three minutes later on a penalty kick.

In the second half, Tendai Ndoro discounted to Zimbabwe.

In the other group game, Algeria, who needed to win and rely on a Tunisian stumble to dream of qualifying, opened the scoring with Islam Slimani within 10 minutes of the final but drew the tie at 43 with Papakouli Diop.

Leicester's star put Algeria ahead 7 minutes into the second, but Moussa Sow made it all the same the following minute, killing the Algerians' chances of advancing in the tournament.

With the result, Senegal secured the place of first place in Group B of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations and will face Cameroon in the quarter-finals. Group A will play against Burkina Faso.
